Victoria's downtown core, particularly areas surrounding Bastion Square and Government Street, is home to some of the most stunning heritage architecture in British Columbia. Many law firms and boutique financial groups operate out of these buildings, prizing the original exposed brick and century-old fir flooring.
However, maintaining these historic materials requires a fundamentally different approach than cleaning a modern steel-and-glass tower.
The Danger of Modern Chemistry
A standard commercial cleaning company relies on highly alkaline floor strippers and synthetic acrylic waxes designed for modern Vinyl Composite Tile (VCT). If these alkaline strippers are applied to antique wood, the chemical reaction will literally burn the cellulose, turning the wood grey or black and irreversibly destroying its patina.
Our Heritage Protocol
At Westcoast Pristine Services, we treat heritage maintenance as an act of preservation.
- Water Limitation: Antique wood is highly susceptible to warping from standing water. We strictly ban wet-mopping in heritage sites. Instead, we utilize specialized microfiber damp-mopping systems that apply only the exact amount of moisture needed to lift surface soil, evaporating within seconds.
- pH-Neutral Cleansers: We utilize specialized, pH-neutral wood soaps that clean without stripping the natural oils or existing protective waxes from the grain.
- Hand-Polishing High-Touch Metals: Historic buildings often feature original brass hardware on doors and elevator banks. We hand-polish these fixtures using non-abrasive compounds to prevent scratching and preserve the original luster.
When you occupy a piece of Victoria's history, you become a steward of that property. Ensure your facility management team shares that responsibility.
